Brake Caliper and Pad Slider Service

​Next, check your wipers.  Wiper blades are designed to work in particular temperatures.  Warm weather blades are more flexible and efficient, but also less durable.  On the other hand, winter blades are flexible at low temperatures but can become soft at high temperatures which can cause premature failure.  To make sure your visibility is 100% this summer check your wipers and change them to match the warmer weather.

Further, look at your battery and battery fluid.  Car batteries are in a water-diluted acid bath and you want to make sure this fluid is full.  While checking for the fluid, also make sure there is no discharge or leakage around the battery's top.  

While preparing your car you should also check your brake fluids.  If your brake fluid is low or old and needs changing, it can lead to lower brake performance or brake failure.  The brake fluid is stored in the translucent reservoir near the base of the car's windshield. Once you’ve found the fluid, make sure the fluid is filled to the full line.  However, if the fluid is dark and grimy the fluid needs to be flushed and replaced immediately. Another important note: brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air making it less effective, so do not use an open brake fluid bottle twice.

Furthermore, you should check your tires for bubbles in the sidewall, uneven wear or visible wear bars.  If you have both winter and summer tires make sure to inspect them both for seasonal inspection in between changes.  Another important note: winter tires and summer tires are designed to work in specific temperatures, so it is imperative that you get your winter tires removed before the warm weather.  If not, your winter tires will react poorly to the heat.

Preventative Maintenance

​As you start to prep for the summer months there is a multitude of things you can do to get your car ready for the warm weather.  For starters, check your engine cooling system. The car’s radiator protects the engine from overheating; however, if your cooling system is not in tip-top shape then your car runs a risk of cracking the engine block or warping the cylinder head.  To check your cooling system, make sure the radiator tank is full of coolant. Next, check the heating hoses for any dry or cracked hoses. You can also squeeze these hoses to see if there are any weak spots. If your hoses are weak, dry, or cracked this could lead to a leak causing your engine to overheat, so make sure you get your hoses changed if you see any indication of weak, dry, or cracked hoses.
